IAN Alpha Fund Co-Leads ₹32.5 Crore Round in Farm Watt Innovations to Scale India’s Bioenergy Supply Chain

In a major boost to India’s clean energy and rural agribusiness landscape, IAN Alpha Fund—the second venture capital fund from the IAN Group—has co-led a ₹32.5 Crore ($3.9M+) funding round in Farm Watt Innovations, alongside Rainmatter.

The fresh injection of capital will be strategically deployed to fortify supply chain infrastructure across India’s rapidly growing bioenergy sector. Key operational focus areas include expanding biomass collection networks, establishing decentralized aggregation hubs, investing in heavy agricultural machinery, and scaling the workforce across multiple Indian states.

Addressing India’s Dual Stubble Burning and Clean Energy Challenge

India produces an estimated 500 million tonnes of agricultural residue annually. However, nearly 92 million tonnes of crop residue are burned openly every year, releasing roughly 34 million tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere. This annual practice causes severe seasonal air pollution across the Indo-Gangetic Plain, severely degrades soil health, and leads to massive economic losses.

Simultaneously, the Government of India’s SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) initiative has catalyzed massive private and public sector investments in Compressed Biogas (CBG) and green energy plants. Industry giants like Reliance, IOCL, HPCL, BPCL, and GAIL are aggressively building CBG infrastructure across the country.

Despite this demand, the bioenergy sector faces a primary operational bottleneck: the lack of an organized, reliable, and scalable biomass supply chain.

Farm Watt Innovations bridges this critical gap between farm-level residue management and industrial green energy demand.

Farm Watt’s Growth Strategy: From Biomass Aggregation to Integrated Bioeconomy

Founded in 2023 by Kumar Neelendu, Farm Watt Innovations operates at the intersection of climate action, rural livelihoods, and renewable energy logistics. Neelendu brings over 23 years of leadership experience in rural development, financial inclusion, and agritech. Since 2015, he has actively collaborated with European technology partners to bring advanced Compressed Biogas (CBG) technologies to Indian and international markets.

Farm Watt is scaling its operations through block-level decentralized aggregation hubs.

Key Operations at Block-Level Hubs

  • Decentralized Collection & Baling: Operating directly at the cluster level to process raw farm stubble quickly.

  • Standardized Logistics & Quality Control: Implementing scientific moisture control, baling, and secure storage protocols.

  • Transparent Farmer Payments: Utilizing digital weighing systems and direct-to-farm payout mechanisms to ensure equitable compensation for agricultural waste.

Currently operating 15 aggregation hubs across 6 states in Northern, Central, and Eastern India, Farm Watt plans to expand its operational footprint to key agricultural states, including:

  • North India: Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar

  • Central & Western India: Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra

  • South India: Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu

Beyond aggregation, Farm Watt plans to develop its own downstream portfolio of CBG, bio-pellet, biochar, carbon credits, and Bio-CBG assets, creating a vertically integrated circular bioeconomy platform.

Executive Commentary

Kumar Neelendu, Founder & Managing Director of Farm Watt Innovations:

"This investment marks an important milestone in Farm Watt's journey towards building a scalable circular bioeconomy. As on the one hand, we had industries coming up in the biogas sector, like Reliance, IOCL, HPCL, BPCL. And, on the other, we had a situation where farmers were burning agri-waste. We thought it was the best time to get into the business."

Sarika Saxena, Managing Partner at IAN Alpha Fund:

"India’s transition to clean energy hinges on solving a massive, dual-sided challenge: managing millions of tonnes of underutilized crop residue while meeting the bioenergy sector’s soaring demand for reliable biomass. This isn’t just an environmental hurdle—it’s a massive supply-chain opportunity.

Farm Watt is capturing this market by building the missing link between farmers and the renewable energy ecosystem. Through their dependable biomass aggregation network, they are simultaneously curbing stubble burning, boosting rural incomes, and accelerating India’s circular bioeconomy. We are proud to back a team whose deep rural market expertise and sharp execution capabilities position them to become a definitive leader in the space."

Market Outlook & Impact

The demand for high-quality, continuous biomass feedstock is set to surge over the coming decade as India accelerates its target for net-zero emissions and mandates CBG blending targets.

By structuring the informal agricultural waste market, Farm Watt Innovations provides a multi-pronged solution:

  1. Environmental: Directly reduces open stubble burning, air pollution, and CO₂ emissions.

  2. Economic: Generates supplementary revenue streams for rural farmers and creates local employment at block-level aggregation hubs.

  3. Industrial: Assures CBG and bio-energy plants of steady, quality-checked biomass supplies, de-risking downstream clean energy projects.
