Artificial Intelligence has emerged as the single largest sector for India’s operator-founders for the first time, with one in four operator-led startups founded in 2025 building AI solutions. According to the second edition of The State of Operator-Led Startups, released jointly by venture capital firm RTP Global and market intelligence platform Tracxn, experienced operators are increasingly choosing entrepreneurship to build India’s next generation of AI-native companies.
The research highlights a significant shift in venture capital allocation across India's technology ecosystem. While operator-led ventures accounted for less than 1% of all technology startups founded between 2023 and 2025, they captured 11% of all tech funding raised in 2025, demonstrating strong investor conviction in founders with prior operational experience.
The Rise of Vertical AI and Changing Startup Economics
The report defines operator-founders as entrepreneurs who have previously spent years building and scaling businesses, leading teams, managing P&Ls, and navigating growth phases at established tech companies.
Out of the 189 operator-founded startups tracked in the study, 51 companies are focused exclusively on AI. Within this cohort, specialized domain applications dominate startup creation over general software builders:
Vertical AI: 30 startups building domain-specific solutions for targeted industries.
Horizontal AI: 7 startups developing broad cross-industry AI tools.
Developer Tools & AI Builders: 4 startups building developer workflows.
AI Infrastructure: 3 startups creating compute and core platform layers.
Other Segments: Emerging platforms across Consumer AI, Agentic AI, and Enterprise AI.
While AI Solutions leads by overall startup count, it ranks fourth in total capital raised within this cohort. This gap indicates an early-stage deployment curve where venture capital funding is expected to follow team creation in subsequent funding rounds.
Disproportionate Capital Efficiency and Accelerated Growth
In a period when broader tech startup formation contracted across India, new operator-led startup creation rebounded by 35% in 2025. Furthermore, operator-led teams progressed through funding stages at a faster pace and secured higher average check sizes than the broader ecosystem.
Seed Stage Valuation Premium: Between 2023 and 2025, the average seed round for operator-led startups reached $2.4 million—1.7x higher than the $1.4 million average for the broader Indian tech ecosystem.
Series A Premium: At Series A, operator-led startups raised an average of $10.5 million (1.25x higher than the $8.4 million ecosystem average), securing an average valuation of $53.3 million (up from $38.5 million in the previous edition).
Surge in Seed Activity: Total seed funding into operator-led teams grew 17.5x from $4.3 million in 2023 to $75.2 million in 2025, with $1M+ seed rounds jumping from 2 to 21 closed deals.
Lower product development costs and shorter experimentation cycles enabled by AI allow operational leaders to pair deep domain knowledge with rapid product deployment, solving complex industry challenges they experienced firsthand.
Executive Perspectives: Execution Muscle in a Selective Market
Commenting on the report findings, Nishit Garg, Partner on the Asia Investment Team at RTP Global, noted:
"As RTP Global completes 15 years of investing in India, this research validates something we've observed for years. Operator-founders bring a distinct company-building muscle shaped by experience, scaling teams, navigating constraints and executing through multiple phases of growth. As AI fundamentally changes how products are built, the qualities that operators bring of pragmatism, execution focus and capital discipline become even more valuable. While this report highlights the growing momentum of operator-founders, our philosophy remains unchanged: we back exceptional founders, regardless of where they come from."
Highlighting the structural evolution of Indian entrepreneurship, Neha Singh, Co-founder and CEO of Tracxn, stated:
"India's founder landscape has evolved significantly over the past decade. A new generation of operator-founders has emerged: professionals who spent years contributing to and growing businesses, and are now building their own. Experience has moved from being a soft signal to a genuine differentiator, and in a selective climate, that experience carries real weight with investors. That, in turn, helps strengthen the foundations of the startup ecosystem. It is also how an ecosystem renews itself, with each generation of companies training the next. This report looks closely at that cohort, and at what it signals for the next chapter of Indian entrepreneurship."
