A now-apparently-inevitable investigation into Twitter’s internal data handling practises has been hinted at by the FTC as the company continues to lay off key employees and improvise new features. According to the agency, “No CEO or company is above the law.” If Elon Musk’s Twitter keeps up its current behaviour, they risk breaking the FTC’s order and incurring serious penalties.
To be clear right away, the FTC has not declared that it is looking into Twitter or Elon Musk, not even that it is gathering data for such an investigation. It also wouldn’t be able to confirm that it was conducting an investigation. But there is little doubt that the company is in the agency’s sights given the circumstantial evidence, common sense, and the ominous statement made today.
